Mid-season Race Report

Here it is, the end of June, and we [me, Debbie, Bryan Eagle, and Brandon Littleton] are just back from our third Corinthian Vintage Race of the season. Vintage racing in College Station at Texas World Speedway has been kind to us this year, with consistent top ten finishes in nine races. This weekend was the best of all----because it rained. Rain is the 'great equalizer' because big horsepower and fat tires give no benefit when driving through a downpour. For Saturday's race, I started in 4th place --- outside of the second row. CCA member and Austinite Nate Nickerson was on the pole in his Caterham Lotus Seven. At the start I was lucky enough to get a big jump on the 911 in front of me, passing him and following Nate into the high speed first turn where we both scared ourselves silly trying to slow our cars while driving through the puddles. After narrowly missing the back of Nate's Lotus, we slid through turn 2 where I got the drier line and Nate got the puddle. Unfortunately, Nate's open cockpit Lotus didn't appreciate the water and started sputtering and then finally died----leaving Nate stranded in the rain for entire the 20 minute race. I didn't find that out until much later, however, since I was still racing out there. In first place. For the first time ever. And it kept on that way for lap after lap, because it seems that the rest of the pack was back behind the high power Mustangs and Porsches who were throwing up so much water spray that nobody could see anything. Finally, one of the 911s started showing up in my mirrors and pretty soon was right on my tail. Even so, it took him 3 laps to get around me, and then only on the last lap did he get by. Results: First in class, second overall.

Sunday morning's race was back on a mostly dry track, so the rain tires were retired and the Hoosiers put back on. Having finished second in the last race, I got to start on the outside of the front row----a position I relinquished to faster cars before the first turn. As I worked my way backward through the pack of faster cars, I began to notice that none of the other cars in my own class had yet passed me. My hopes were getting ever higher when I recognized the TR4 coming up fast behind me. And then he passed me by one car length on the last lap. Results: second in class.

The Sunday afternoon race put me right back behind the TR4 and we fought hard for the entire 20 minute race, swapping positions back and forth. This time our finish was reversed and I beat HIM by a fender. Results: first in class. So, after 9 races I have a reasonably comfortable points lead in my class with 2 race weekends to go. Unfortunately, that's the end of out Corinthian racing for the year because of scheduling conflicts. We will be competing in the Carrera Panamerica Mexican road race in October so we won't be able to attend the last two races.Plenty of BMW CCA Club Racing remains, however. We will be racing in Colorado at Second Creek Raceway in 2 weeks for the opening of the Octoberfest celebration and the following weekend we will be racing at Motorsport Ranch in Ft Worth. Possible races at Road America, Las Vegas, and Pueblo yet this summer await budgetary decisions. I am currently in second place nationally in my class, behind Jeff Bailey of Houston, and he will be at both of the next races---should be very exciting.
