320i Brake Optimization

Stainless Steel Braided Aircraft Brake Lines
Replace rubber flexible brake hoses with Teflon lined
aircraft hoses to get the firm pedal needed for performance
driving.

Brake Fluid
Flush brake fluid COMPLETELY every year, and
immediately before any track events. For ordinary use we
recommend Castrol LMA DOT 4 fluid. For even more severe
use, we recommend ATE Blue Racing Fluid. We keep pressure
bleeders charged with both types.

Front: several options
1. Stock brake pads tend to squeal and cover the wheels
with black dust. Replacement with Repco/PBR pads
usually eliminates both. For more aggressive drivers,
we recommend PBR MetalMaster metallic at just
slightly higher price.
2. In 1977, the 320i came with vented front brake rotors
for better heat dissipation. Later year 320s have solid
[cheaper] rotors more suitable for American 55mph
speed limits. Upgrading 1978-1983 320s to the vented
rotor is as simple as installing the rotors and calipers.
All factory parts except the pads.
3. Euro 323i: bigger struts and calipers, 323 vented
rotors, PBR Metal Master pads

Rear brakes: 320 rear drum brakes can be fitted with racing
shoes. They can also be changed to disc brakes through a 323
rear subframe conversion. Inquire.
