Don't let this happen to you!
Bad things happen to good BMWs
By Bryan Eagle

This 8 series came in with an ignition that occasionally would spin instead of starting the car.  Dale removed the ignition lock tumbler assembly  and found that a small tab cast into the assembly had broken off, allowing the lock to spin.  This tab was an anti-theft device, designed to snap off if a screw driver was used to try to force the ignition on.  An unwitting driver could shear off this tab by trying to turn the key without first unlocking the steering wheel.  This affects E31 8 series, E36 3 series, E38 7 Series, & E39 5 Series.  This information is from tech service bulletin number 32 01 99.
