Melted
Coils, Performance Spoiled

When
BMW released the M50 motor in the early nineties, they moved the
centralized coil
of the earlier engines to separate coils for each cylinder. This
was to improve spark performance and to allow the computer to have
more control over how and when each spark plug fired. As the coils
reach the end of their lifetime and begin to fail, they cause rough
acceleration from idle to about 3000 RPM. A telltale sign of coil
failure is black melted plastic seeping from the cracked side of
the coil.
When
allowed to run too long with melted coils, the engine control computer
can be damaged also, so it's important to diagnose and replace the
failed coils as soon as possible. This malady affects 325i, 328i
, 525i, 528i and all M50 motor variants.
