A
BMW for La Carrera Panamericana.
La Carrera Panamericana --- a Historic Vintage Race
In the US, the name La Carrera usually brings forth a response like
"what's that?"
or "that's that Baja race in the dirt, right?" In Europe, in
Latin America, and in much of the rest of the world, that name brings
to mind an arduous, exotic, and historic test of man and machine
against time and the elements, against fatigue and impatience, and
against the ever present danger of surprises inherent to a 3000km
race on public highways.
The original Carrera was run in the years
1950-1954 and was sponsored by the Mexican government as a way of
publicizing internationally the new system of paved roads that ran
the length of the country. In 1988 the race was revived and every
year since then about 100 racers from around the world compete in
cars built to resemble the original entrants. Numerous classes exist,
all for cars earlier than 1965. The event is run in a pro-rally
format, with most of the mileage done under TSD rally conditions
and 3-4 unlimited speed sections per day. The race is decided by
cumulative times for the speed sections.
