By Terry Sayther

Most of the Pirates stayed up very late talking, drinking, and swimming, then arose late and lounged. Terry and Debbie hired a local guide for a 4 hour muddy jungle scramble looking at plants and unexcavated pyramids. Next we drove to the beautiful falls and cave at Misol-Ha where we swam again and visited the river cave there. Then we drove on to Agua Azul for a quick view of the most beautiful waterfalls in the area, before we drove on ever south over many stupid, stupid topes to San Cristobal de las Casas for the night. While Terry and Debbie once again went to bed early, the boys discovered a reggae bar/band and danced until the night was gone.

After a slow start, we drove on to El Chorreadero, a gigantic river coming out of a cave to form a beautiful waterfall. We climbed the waterfall and entered the cave. Marty wanted to shoot the rapids, but we talked him out of it. Marty and Edgar had never been in a cave before, and they bravely pressed on, fording the river twice to a giant, roaring waterfall room. This is a very adventurous cave for first timers, and we applaud their courage. The Mexicans below called us all crazy…. maybe they're right.
On to Tuxtla Guiterrez, the capitol of Chiapas and the start of preparations for the race. WE MADE IT!! (So far)

Wed, Oct 20, 04

These were preparation days, and we had lots to do. We unloaded the truck and trailer first. Both cars had to be cleaned---inside, outside and under the hood. Both had to be checked over thoroughly and lists of detail problems corrected. The white 1800ti had to be lettered and all the required sponsor stickers applied. The 502 sponsor stickers had to be updated. Drivers, co-drivers, and back-up drivers had to be licensed, and medical exams had to be completed for all. Six Mexican racing licenses at $180 each: ka-ching. Technical inspection for both cars was pretty easy, though there were a few details that had to be ironed out, as always.

We also began introducing the "Arrgh!" concept to the assembling masses. As the Terry and the Pirates Racing Team, we felt it was our duty to begin recruiting more pirates to the race, so we passed out about 1500 "Arrgh!" stickers to all the competitors and crews. "Arrgh!" quickly became the common slogan, at least when we were around, and crews were talking pirate talk all over the place! Where does a pirate eat? Aarrby's, of course. Where does a pirate shop for his kids toys? Toys ARRR Us! What is the pirate movie rated? Arrrr! You get the idea.
