Thursday, 10/24/02, Final Details and a Practice Run

Thursday was a busy day of final checking for the BMW, the truck, and the trailer---our last pre-race day with any extra time scheduled. We finished up a few lettering details, installed our numbers and sponsor stickers, cleaned out both vehicles, chose and installed final equipment loads for both vehicles, attended a navigators meeting to learn about checkpoints, time cards, and signals, and got ourselves ready for the "pre-qualifying run". The pre-qualifying run was an afternoon practice run to test the timing systems, the navigators, the drivers, the cars, etc.  Since the schedule said 3 to 5PM for this event, we naturally assumed it was a two-hour event. We arrived at about 2.30, watched a trick-driving demo for awhile, and then stood around admiring the other cars until around 4.15 when the first cars were flagged away. We were thinking that these delays were designed to get us used to typical Mexican time, but then we found out that the timed speed section was only 3.5 minutes long. Oh well, it was still great fun, and it got us more ready for the real race next day.  The most fun was the transit stage where we got to pass car after car as the police stopped side traffic and waved us on.  Finally, it was back to the hotel for a mandatory drivers meeting where we got our initial starting positions (ours was 71st position) and our souvenir La Carrera PeeBags.  After a mediocre steak dinner, we were in bed at around  midnight---another trend for the rest of the event.
