Tuesday, 10/22/02, Attending to Details in Tuxtla

First, we located the Chiapas Feria or Fairgrounds, where we found the headquarters for pre-race festivities. We unloaded the car and got ourselves checked in, we hired a great guy to spend the day lettering the car for the race, we got medical inspections for Brandon and I, and we passed the car through technical inspection. Everything was fine except for our final classification. The BMW was unusual enough that the final decision about what class it would be in had to be made by the big boss, who hadn't yet arrived.

Wednesday, 10/23/02, Touristing in Chiapas

Today we enjoyed a day of relaxation and sightseeing---no car stuff. We took a boat ride up Sumidero Canyon in the morning where we saw a beautiful lake between towering limestone bluffs with birds and alligators on the banks. Then we visited Cueva de Chorreadero in the afternoon. This famous cave has a large waterfall coming out of its mouth and beautiful pools below. We explored back inside the darkness of the cave until another waterfall blocked our way. Finally, we topped off the day with a brief visit and a bit of shopping in San Cristobal de las Casas, a cool, highland city in central Chiapas.
